What is PHP?
PHP is a popular coding language. It is flexible, easy to use, and happens to work well with MySQL. PHP can be embedded into HTML files which makes it even easier to use. Once PHP is learned, you can use it just like any other coding language. It allows for an easy-to-create interactive web pages.
What is MySQL?
MySQL is the coding language designed specifically for databases. It tells the database what to do using "queries". Queries can move, add, delete, etc. information.
Working Together
PHP and MySQL are both free, easy to use, and work well together. Once a database connection has been created, MySQL can tell the database what to do. PHP allows you to do this in an interactive way.

For Example . . .
You can write a form in PHP to collect a name. With MySQL working with the PHP, the information can be submitted into the appropriate database and table.

Databases
Databases are controlled by MySQL. But what is a database? Databases store information. They can't do anything else. PHP and MySQL together can retrieve and use the information. They are organized into tables and cells to make them well organized and easy to navigate.
All in all, when used together, PHP and MySQL can make a very useful coding tool.

Yep, Cutenews is a PHP script. It stores users, passwords, e-mails, and of course, the news. That's a perfect example.
